Gavin Martin has been djing since 1996, having in that time played at all major events & festivals in the progressive and trance world in Melbourne, as well as extensively interstate & overseas.
Gavin's music style is a diverse, but still interlinked blend of deep evolving progressive, techno & house sounds with an earthy edge, intelligent atmospherics, & an ear on forward thinking sonics; currently his sound can be described as a hybrid; flowing between genres with a deep phat feel, guaranteed to take the dance floor & listener alike on a unique journey.
Diverse roots stemmed from a love of early 1990 ÒraveÓ sounds, into the early days of Melbourne's outdoor scene, & a natural progression into more ÒprogressiveÓ sounds, inspired by the likes of Sasha & John Digweed.
In the mid to late 90's Gavin began to gain mainroom spots at all of the big ÒprogressiveÓ events in Melbourne, such as Two Tribes, Gatecrasher, Welcome, Platipus Sound System, Renaissance & many more, playing alongside & warming up for many big names.
Together with Green Ant's Frank Venuto, Gavin put on Melbourne's infamous Substance underground progressive nights over a three year timeframe in the early 2000's, touring & playing with international acts including Lucien Foort, Lexicon Avenue, Max Graham, Andy Jarrod (3 beat), Lemon 8, Christopher Lawrence & many more.
Gavin became resident in 2003 for ÒPrivate FunctionÓ, which went on to be Melbourne's premier progressive club night, spanning 3 years. Gavin mixed the Òprivate function sessions cd Ð volume 3Ó in 2005.
As time progressed, the passion shifted more to the world of festivals & festival culture;
Gavin became, & has been for some 8 years, a resident & representative dj for Melbourne's world renowned Green Ant & Rainbow Serpent Festival, playing the infamous Monday day session, to eager & open minded & eared full dancefloor listening audiences, warming up for & playing alongside some of the worlds finest, including Minilogue, Antix, Kruger & Coyle & many more. Gavin also plays regularly at other festivals across Melbourne & beyond, such as Akasha Festival, Earthcore, Earthdance & Maya project, as well as many club nights varying from bigger scale indoor international events to more intimate rooms.
Overseas, in July 2007 Gavin played 2 gigs in Japan, in Tokyo & Nagoya, which were a big success; there are plans now for a further tour next year, on the way to Europe 2008! Gavin has played in India at Elevate in Delhi, one of Asia's finest clubs. He has toured New Zealand 3 times, having played twice at New Years eve: The Gathering with John Digweed, & also at Alpine, with Antix & Freq from Iboga records. He has also headlined club gigs in Christchurch & Duneeden.
Twice he has played at Thailands infamous full moon parties, as well as club gigs at Ko Samui.
Interstate this year, Gavin played at Winter Solstice in Cairns, and is heading back to Cairns in September for the ÒDeep as FunkÓ crew. He is also booked for the ÒVision FestivalÓ in Northern New South Wales in November. He has played in Adelaide & Brisbane & Sydney, with more gigs to come soon!
Gavin has recently become label representative dj for ÒOPEN RECORDSÓ, Australia's premier new progressive label, and his own debut release under his GMJ moniker, ÒPyramid MoonÓ, is due to be released shortly, along with the ÒLerenpri epÓ Ð a 3 track digital ep under his ÒFulcrumÓ alias. Also, his track ÒSovereignÓ has been included on the next Open Records comp ÒFestivusÓ; coming soon!
Gavin is also now representing ÒBUS RECORDSÓ , the new French label run by Matt ÒD-SENSÓ, and has an ep coming out on the label in the near future.
There are other upcoming releases to for this year, on Open records & Resurgent, under both his ÒGMJÓ & ÒFULCRUMÓ monikers.
Of recent times, Gavin has performed sets of all his own music to festival & club dancefloors with great reactions.
Gavin's own night, Namaste, has been running successfully, now in its 5th year bridging the gap between Òprogressive & tranceÓ further, with a full progression of sound. He is again involved with Green Ant's Frank in a night called Cosmic By Nature, which from 2005-07 has seen artists such as Antix, Freq, D-Nox, Kasey Taylor, Solead, Motion & tryptich.
His passion for sound and his craft has seen him deliver many memorable sets to crowds on Melbourne dancefloors and beyond!
